Scottsdale touches Phoenix and Paradise Valley on its Western borders, whereas Fountain Hills and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community lie towards the eastern borders. The north of Scottsdale is bordered by Carefree and the south by Tempe. Formerly Scottsdale was occupied by Hohokam, a sect of the four main prehistoric archaeological cultures of the area. It is now hailed as the American Southwest. The period between 800 AD and 1400 AD belonged to the Hohokam civilization in this region; the people were mostly farmers and irrigated the land by means of canals. An extensive network of canals, measuring up to 125 miles was built during that time and is still existent today. |

Scottsdale changed from a Prima village after the European settlement but a few Prima refused to move on and stayed in their ancestral homes till the late 20th century. During the 1960s, on the southeastern curve of the Hayden Road and the Indian Bend Road stood a conventional Prima lodging which remained occupied. Presently, all Prima residing in Scottsdale favor contemporary dwellings over traditional Prima abodes. However, several Prima and Maricopa families continue to maintain their homes towards the eastern border of Scottsdale, in the time honored Salt River Prima-Maricopa Indian Community. |

The first claim in the region was laid by an Anglo company in 1868. During this time the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company was established by Jack Swilling with the aim to restore, improve and develop the Hohokam’s ancient canal network. Albeit, these developments it took twenty more years for the Anglo influx to expand significantly. Winfield Scott, who was a Chaplain in the United States Army, visited the area in 1880s to publicize Phoenix and the surrounding region; he himself was captivated by the land and bought 640 acres of land for a meager amount of $1600. |
